Newbie here(been only 6 months), Thanks to quarantine I started chess, however, I have been stuck at the lower 1300s for the past 1 month( in rapid ). How can I improve beside tactics? Should I learn more openings? I usually play kings pawn/Ruy Lopez if I'm white or Sicilian/french defence for e5 and for d4 Indian game if I'm black . Should I expand more? I would like to know why I keep failing sad.png

lack of experience and knowledge, you need to be patient.

study your lost games, understand which move killed your winning chance.

Ego problem?

I doubt it is your openings. Just follow opening principles. Look to improve all areas. Are you still losing undefended material or losing to simple tactics? This is still common at lower ratings. How is your positional chess? I found playing through annotated GM games in Logical Chess by Chernev helped me. Are you exploiting weak squares, opening files, etc. Are you able to identify and pressure simple weaknesses in your opponents position like backward pawns? Do you think about their moves and plans and how you might frustrate them while advancing your own agenda? Do you improve your pieces or go off and attack stuff without considering whether it is to your advantage or what you are leaving behind? Pushing your rating into the teens only requires good principled play. Dont spend too much time on openings.
