I just made it to 920 at bullet and I think having recently learned an opening for white and a couple for black has really helped me-it means I know what I'm doing for the beginning of the game and can make my first several moves of the game quickly knowing exactly what to do so I gain a time advantage at the beginning of the game. It also means I know what I should be trying to generally do after I have finished developing my pieces. It generally makes me feel more confident in the game because I am more comfortable with the position that I am in.

If you do decide to learn some openings, I would highly recommend Gotham Chess on YouTube because his 10 minute opening videos are amazing

also fizwig is right-you won't learn as much and be able to progress if you only play bullet ( I don't know you might also be playing longer games too but I'm just saying). I just play bullet if I have a bit of time to kill .Analyzing any game-,if you won lost or drew it,is very helpfu.
First off play longer games, and than later on play shorter games. Your skills will mostly transfer, well for my case it did. Just improve your chess and then play bullet. Play decent fast moves and your good. In order to play good moves, you need to become better at chess, which requires you to play long games.
