Very valuable input. Thank you CRYYSIS.
Aren't you simply delaying the inevitable as the winner of the beginners matches will end up playing stronger players in round 2?
Hi All,
Just a quick q re arranging casual OTB tournaments.
I'm planning to run a swiss style tournament, and I read online that to start round 1, you should basically have the top half of the people playing the bottom half. Thereafter, it seems that the tournament template will pair people with similar win-loss ratios throughout the remainder of the rounds.
My question is - would it corrupt the tournament if I manually pair people with similar skill level from Round 1, and then let the template assign the opponents from Round 2 onwards?
I'm just thinking for motivation, it would be better for me to manually pair our beginners with other beginners, rather than pairing our beginners with advanced players in round 1, and risk demotivating them to continue in the tournament as they'll be gearing up to play and suffer two hard losses with white and black in round 1.
I hope the spirit of what I am trying to say, makes sense.
TLDR - does manually matching players of similar skill to play in Round 1 of a swiss interfere with anything, considering the online template generators typically try to pair the strong people with the weak people during round 1 (why is this?)
One option would be to do accelerated pairings. Split the players into fourths, top two sections play each other just like a normal swiss, as do the bottom two. Depending on how many players, you could do that over a couple of rounds.

The result of this will be that the lower rated players will end up playing the higher rated players in round 2 instead of round 1 (for the most part). The whole idea behind a Swiss System is that players of the same level will tend to group together as the tournament goes on. It is intentionally not that way when the tournament starts. You can, however, use an accelerated swiss system (which pairs the upper half against each other, and the lower half against each other - effectively like having 2 separate sections for up to a few rounds).
