Time management in Rapid

I usually play 15|10 rapid and I find myself spending too much time on moves, and I end up being way behind my opponent time at the end of the game, which I feel unnecessarily clouds my ability to play in comparison to my opponent. What are some good tips or strategies to not wasting time on moves? Anything is appreciated, thanks in advance.

There are two logical options but I recommend my first one:

1) Play even longer time controls happy.png Everyone naturally thinks at different speeds, so instead of rushing, just increase time control so you are comfortable and not rushed. You can lessen the time control gradually with more experience and practice when you will be able to calculate faster, have patterns in mind and be able to play better chess overall happy.png

2) Learn to move faster. You can save time on the game by learning opening theory (so you spend less time navigating the opening during the actual game) or learning basic theoretical endgames (similarly, so you can convert them quicker with confidence).

You might have already been implementing opening principles if your rapid rating on chess.com is over 1000 already, but here is a good resource just in case this is new for you happy.png

Things like opening principles can help cut down on the time you spend in the opening too because you will typically get a playable middlegame this way. happy.png

30 min is the minimum rapid i touch

15/10 feels like blitz and 10 feels like bullet

play fewer but more focused games at longer time control and spend good amount of time going over afterwards

the quality of games should be better at longer time so your analysis will be better and you’ll get more out of it

I play 10|0

I usually spend around 1-2 minutes in the opening because I (usually) play openings that I'm very comfortable with. I'll spend like 4 on the middlegame probably and just use whatever else I have on the endgame

Of course you could vary with those numbers but I think it's important to have a plan on how you're going to use your time

Tell me, have you ever tried OTB games? Because they are usually 30+0 or longer. I do 55|5 or 60|0 games generally.

I noticed you focus on bullet and therefore are was @pfren classes as a "speed chess player." How did you get better without improving at longer time controls first?

Because playing bullet gives you a lot of exposure and experience when playing openings, middlegames, and endgames. Basically, I don't need to think about a move that I know is good, and I know if a move is good if I've played it before and it worked.

Yet that hasn't gotten you past 2000, has it? I haven't grinded bullet nearly as much and yet I might be able to hold my own for a little while.

Wdym? I've passed 2000 in bullet. I can also usually beat my friend who's 1783 rapid.

I mean have you hit 2100 and been able to stay there for a while? Also rapid ratings are undergoing a lot of inflation right now because of all the newer players starting at 2000.

tbh, my true strength is probably below 1200. I only have a high rating in bullet because of my opening.
