Are you new to chess and don't know what to do? Or are you struggling to make progress? So am I, but with these tips, you'll find useful strategies to improve your game and gain more confidence on the board.
1. Play longer time controls.
As a beginner, you need to play longer time controls. Why? Playing blitz or bullet will teach you to move fast, which isn't good in rapid. Second, if you're a beginner, the best way to learn is by thinking about your moves, not trying to win with little time on the clock!
2. Try to understand what your opponent is doing.
Most beginners only worry about their plan, but your opponent is trying to win, too! Whenever they make a move, try to figure out why they did it. If you're having trouble doing that, try flipping the board and seeing what they see!
3. Take your time and think.
Playing a chess game is like crossing the road. You always have to look twice! Make sure that you don't blunder pieces, and always look for checks, captures, and threats.
4. Control the center.
Controlling the center is crucial in winning a chess game. Controlling the center is useful not just in the opening, but in the middle game and endgame as well! Try to fight for the center in the opening, and then try to maintain that control throughout the game.
5. Practice.
You're not going to become good at chess in a few weeks. I've tried for months, but I'm still not above 300. That's okay! Chess is a complex game, so it will take a while!
Those are all my tips. I hope they help you!
