Training with computers

First off, how effective is training with computers? second off, if I am training against the computer, should i make the difficulty impossible or should i make it so i can just barely beat it?

I don't think there have been any scientific studies but most people dislike getting whomped 100 times in a row and get discouraged. Therefore, a more gradual approach as you move along seems more reasonable.
