If you want to teach a friend how to play a game and let them win but you don't want to lose your rating or if your trying a new opening, play unrated chess! how to use it: go to play then press new game and after that press custom challenge then do unrated! Comments about it pleasehappy.png

It's silly to protect your rating. The only purpose of your rating is to help you find a good game.  Your rapid rating now is 824 and if you lose the next 10 in a row, you are much more likely to get an opponent at your level in the next game than if you played 10 unrated games.

Also, you can monitor your progress better with rated games. In unrated, you get all sorts of people and a lot of the time their rating won't match their skill level, and many are cheaters or sandbaggers or people who are just getting back to the game after a long hiatus. But if you are playing a friend, it should be okay. I've been playing unrated games with one of my friends because it's more enjoyable and casual when you don't have to worry about your rating.

You clicked the quote button then modified the good post into a bad post? C'mon.

How much do you get if you're a new egg and  you beat someone 200 above you? Round about

That is very helpful. Ratings should be taken very seriously. I mean we all know it's online chess, but still it's good to know that the ratings here have some integrity. So if anyone is just studying or not playing a serious game/match, then unrated sounds like the best choice. Just as you would OTB. Wouldn't really rate a casual game you don't even much mind aborting, if need be, would you?

This is also true. Luckily it's not only your rating that determines the level of opponent you get. There's also that average opponent part. So you could still be paired with opponents rated higher than yourself if you tweak your challenges a bit to push that average point up a bit.

He changed the question after he posted it to include what it you are teaching a friend to play or trying to learn a new opening.

In the friends case, unrated games would be appropriate.

When learning a new opening, it doesn't make as much sense.  Presumably when somebody wants to learn the Sicilian, they have seen a few games or read articles about it.   If you decide to learn a new opening, you are going to lose games for a while.  Hopefully at some point you will learn to avoid the basic mistakes and your rating will start recovering.

When you play unrated games here, the "ratings" shown by the players who you get matched with are often highly suspect.  You won't have any idea if you are making real progress or not.

When you are new, your rating adjusts really quickly. It may change more than 100 points in one game.

That's because the rating system (Glicko) used here takes the fact that you are new or haven't played in a long time into account.  There is a measure called RD or rating deviation that goes along with your rating that will determine how quickly your rating will adjust.

As you play more, the adjustments get smaller and smaller.

sometimes its fun to do unrated if you want to play a game but without the stress of losing. this helps me sometimes

If I just want to have fun and not worry about my rating and not challenge myself too much and have an enjoyable time after a glass of wine or two--I just go to one of the bots. Pick one that you know you'll beat to just fool around. Or pick one that's pretty challenging and know that it won't affect your rating, and it won't gloat or trash talk when it beats you. (And it won't care one way or the other).
