Is it considered cheating or bad etiquette to use the analyze screen during play?
I initially thought it was cheating, but why do they provide the tool during play?

Hi,

Only specifically during daily games, you are allowed to use the analyze screen, which can allow you to move pieces around to calculate easier.

In formal daily chess, players are allowed to set up a board and move around the pieces, then mail their opponent their move after they calculated the possibilities. Note, this is not allowed in Live Chess.

In dailies you are also allowed to use opening databases and consult chess books. Things that are not allowed are using chess engines and help from other people.

Generally, daily games are meant to follow rules similar to correspondence games, where having a physical board and access to chess books would be a given. As pointed out here, the only forbidden resources are engines (including the computer analysis available in the generic analysis window) and endgame tablebases that fully solve endgame positions.

As long as you don't use a computer/chess engine to calculate moves, or consult with another human about the game, for daily games you can consult other, passive, resources such as books, articles, online databases, opening explorers, etc. However, for live games it is illegal to consult or employ any external aid or resource for assistance with a game in progress.
