When you reach 500, (For hobby Players)
This... does not really make any sense. You could replace 500 with any number, and half with whatever the comparison is with 1000 and it wouldn't even matter. 100, 2000, etc. Guess it gets awkward with decimals/fractions, so than you just say "more than half of" or "greater than" etc. to get a clean number for some cases.
If you are playing casually, who cares what your rating is? But your post/explanation is just silly.

I am not sure what is your wish? Are you asking how to improve or just saying that you want to stay in 500 rating range?

The point I was trying to establish is, that for just be a hobby chess player 500 is not such a bad rating to have.

I would argue that it is. Also, hobby is a really open-ended word. It could be 2 hours a day or 2 hours a month.

true
Well, it's a mater of perspective. If you are just playing for fun and not really trying to improve, and are succeeding at enjoying the game, then any rating is not so bad! But if you are going by pure statistics, a rating of 500 implies that about 95% of the site is a stronger player. So I would consider that objectively bad. Either way, good luck with your chess!

Objectively 1200 is an EDGE in between of a hobby player & seasonal chess player, but more important you must have some fun! When I got 21XX OTB I lost that feeling of fun and happiness ... it was only daly homework for many hours and lot of mental pain during each game I played because of "responsibility and commitment to win", so I stopped to play over 2 years ago. Have fun!

I consider myself a "hobby player" having never played a serious game, have never played OTB, and am therefore unrated. I only learnt chess last year, starting off around 600 rated myself, and have gradually progressed to around 1700 in 3 min blitz, and 1900 in 10 min rapid. As said above, strength is relative and a matter of perspective. I'd consider myself as an "intermediate" but still very much a "hobbiest".
The most important thing is to enjoy playing, and not getting stressed by chasing rating. As a "beginner", you should focus on building a solid foundation by learning opening principles, studying tactics and learning basic endgames - and the rating will follow.

Every rating player can enjoy the game. I had insanely interesting games where both sides hung pieces left and right, you can enjoy the game if you are 400, you can enjoy the game if you are 2 000. So if someone just wants to casually play without trying to get better, it is completely fine as that is his/her wish.
Hey Jim,
You're a nice kid and certainly can enjoy the game at any level.....Btw,from your profile page,if you wish to hit 800(not too hard) simply read the book.....
"The Complete idiot's Guide To Chess".......
It is very easy to get through and I went from 430 to an easy 800 after I read this. It's alot of fun and gives you much chess history along the way....Not a bore, btw.
Good luck
