Where to place my rooks

I know they belong on open files, but is there a place I should always place them in the beginning of the game ? Thanks ..

Not really. It depends so much on the position. But the idea is not to move the rooks at all early on. You should focus on moving your central pawns, your knights and your bishops. Only after that you should think about castling which will bring your rook to the f file is you castle kingside (which I recommend unless you are a strong player). Often, one of the files c, d, e or f becomes open or half open and that is often a good indication of where to put your rooks.
If you have an open file, one good tactic is to double your rook (put both rooks on the same file) after which you can penetrate to the 7th rank (which is to move one rook to the 7th rank (if you are white) or the 2nd rank (if you are black). If you manage to get both your rooks on the 7th rank that can be very hard to defend against.
