I've a friend who've just started chess and asking whether Queens Gambit or Italian Game(or the Spanish one) is the better opening if you don't want complex position, can't really give him any advice since he's the yapping machine so I gonna let you guys Internet player do this.

All 3 are good, but if I had to order them, then

  1. Ruy Lopez
  2. Italian
  3. Queen's Gambit

That is also what AlphaZero thinks: Figure 30

Don’t play either! The English opening is the way to go!

I'd recommend the Spanish to your friend.

Nah Italian is better

If your friend is a true beginner, Their are only 3 lines which I would recommend.

A true Beginner has a chess ranking which ranges between 1,000 to 1,300.

I don’t recommend these lines for people below 1,000 or above 1,300 for several reasons which I will not go into just so my post isn’t very long.

The 3 openings recommended to Beginners are:

- London System (1.d4)

- Italian Game (1.e4)

- King’s Indian Attack System (1.Nf3)

———————

I only recommend playing the Queen’s Gambit & Ruy Lopez when your an Advanced Chess Player. They are top tier lines which carry tons of theory. The positions are also very complex.

Its not recommended for a True Beginner to play something so complex/tough.

All 3 are very good, but I would recommend 1.e4 for a beginner, but it is possible to play 1. d4 as well.

Ruy Lopez is my personal favorite, but if he goes for 1. e4, Italian is perfectly fine as well, as is Scotch.

when i started out on this site i tried ruy lopez and i could never understand the main idea of the opening. with italian i could get into positions that i sort of understood and it felt like my pieces were in correct positions to attack the opponent.

I don't have any experience playing queen's gambit.

Italian is good too. 🙂♟️

i’m 550 on rapid and i always use the italian

The Italian Game might be slightly better for a complete beginner because of its straightforward piece development and early castling.

Richard Reti advised beginners to learn open games (1.e4) before moving on to closed openings (1.d4 etc). Surprisingly the Italian Game (3.Bc4) is currently at least as popular as the Ruy Lopez among elite players. No-one should play the Queen's Gambit, famously described by Bobby Fischer as "dull, and a draw".
