Does anyone know how to get better at chess?

baddogno

Everyone knows how.  It just takes time and effort.  Usually more than we are willing to give...wink.png

Get better at pattern recognition and visualizing positions in your head. Chess is basically a game of visualization and pattern recognition.

Check this out if you have the time:

You can use it as a guide of sorts to help you improve your game to some intermediate level.

As pointed out by baddogno above, improving in chess requires self initiative, and lots of work...if you don't put in the effort to study and learn on your own, you're not likely to improve rapidly or substantially...

As a first step toward improvement, in my blog article above be sure to locate the link for John Bartholomew's Chess Fundamentals on YouTube and watch his video Chess Fundamentals #1: Undefended Pieces, as well as read the section on Playing Longer Time Controls (at the end of the article).

Doing puzzles and tactics are great. What I do is those things and also study the game. I read a lot of chess books and create studies on Lichess.org with them which helps me so I don't have to refer back to the book every time I want to learn the theory again. The studies I make go over the mainline theory and interesting subvariations/mistakes. You don't have to put every move or variation in the study just the most important to you. I have two examples here and here. Both books have different writing styles so I added them both to give you two ideas. Here is a link to some free chess books from archive.org.

It's not enough to learn these openings unless you practice and play them. After your game ends, analyze your game (Lichess does this for free) and see what you could have done better. I like to go to where my opponent plays a different move than what I played against and see if I played correctly against it and if not how to. The book isn't going to go over every variation or idea so you need to do the rest from there. Hope this helps

Look at the board. Counter your opponent's serious threats as you build your attack.

Do that and you will get better

Except I actually do want to get better I have now bought a membership and now trying to find a coach although it is hard to find one because of COVID I have successfully found one and my rating has boosted up 200 and maybe all I needed was advise from helping people unlike you.
