WHY AM I SO [removed ]STUPID? CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY BRAIN?

I hate this [removed  -- MS] game so much. I've been playing for two years, I KNOW I can play better than this, but I'm getting smoked by 1100's. I've been playing 8+ hours every [removed] day trying to get my stupid ELO back but I'm just losing game after game. How is it so hard to beat pure beginners?

If these guys at 1100 know how to play 80%+ games and know how to do 3-4 move tactics and checkmates, then how will I stand any chance in hell to make it to 1500.

Do I have a learning disability? Am I really stupid? Why can't I just get better? Why can't I reach like 1200 at the very least? I don't get it. I'm wasting my entire day feeling angry and depressed chasing my elo back and ending on a loss and it's ruining my entire life.

"It's a board game, relax" - every body who says this is gifted and 1500+. They don't understand how frustrating it is to be this bad at chess and not be able to get better.

It's impossible how am I supposed to get better if no matter how hard I try there are literal beginners crushing me? It's the worst feeling in the world! It makes me feel literally brain damaged.

Yesterday I lost like 15 games in a row and I broke down crying. You may think this is an overreaction but it's not at all. Imagine if they gave you a soccer ball and told you to stand a few feet away from the goal and just shoot and score. And you tried like 100 times and couldn't get the ball in more than a couple of times. How much of a dunce would you feel like?

I'm literally becoming suicidal because I'm rightfully angry at how slow I am. And then I see people with accounts with over 8000 games and they are STILL stuck at 1100. This doesn't make me feel better, it makes me even more depressed.

When I win and go up I feel good from the inside. I don't mind losing just under 50% of my games, but I'm losing so bad all my elo is doing is going down. Just tanking. And tanking. And tanking. It's beyond upsetting. I can't think about anything else. My friend is 1300 just after a few months of just playing. JUST PLAYING. I feel like I'm just extremely slow.

This sounds like burnout.

Lmfao 100 points down now. I'm so worthless I hate myself. I'm never going to get better at chess.

Yeah I know where you’re coming from. Maybe we both like overreacting, but I used to have this exact same mindset. I actually tried playing chess with my dad when I was much younger (around 6 or 7), but I had trouble handling losses and I’d end up crying or throwing all the pieces around. Now that I’m older, I’m getting back into the game. I still tilt if I’ve lost a few games obviously, but it’s a lot better.

I suppose the biggest change you should make (and this helped me A LOT), is don’t look at the elo too much. I know it’s tempting, I like watching it go up too, but your main focus should be the games you play and the quality you play at. Take each loss as a lesson, review your games (with or without premium, no difference). I have learnt most of the tactics and traps I know by facing them and getting destroyed. Believe me, you will remember an idea a lot better if you lost to it then if you read about it somewhere.

And at the end of the day, it is just a board game. I’m not saying this to put you down, I get mad over it too, but that’s important to remember. You’re still worth a lot no matter what ❤️. The key is to enjoy the game, otherwise what’s the point?
Stan2008Stan
Also you can just play unrated games if ELO is really getting you down. But I understand if you don’t want to, because honestly I don’t either. Cause what’s the point if they’re not rated?
SacrifycedStoat
Calling the 1100 range “pure beginners”? Really?

Anyway, if you want to improve, then review every game and see why you lost (or won). What’s most important is having fun. If worrying about rating isn’t fun, play unrated, or ignore rating. If chess isn’t fun, you don’t have to play.
SacrifycedStoat
There are lots of guides and videos out there if you want to improve.

You don't get better just by playing 8 hours a day of internet blitz and rapid. You need to study, attend in person chess events with a real time control, etc.

Chess is not just tactics either. You need to learn how to calculate ("The Inner Game of Chess" by Andrew Soltis), Strategy - there are numerous books on chess strategy, Endgame play ("Silman's Complete Endgame Course" by Jeremy Silman). You will eventually need to learn openings, but not until about 1800. Until then, make sure you understand all the basic opening concepts. Control the center. Don't move the same piece twice unless it is threatened. Get castled. Don't move the Queen early.

At your rating, you should also choose a player from BEFORE 1950 and study his games. In the Move by Move series, there is a book on Morphy's Games, Steinitz's Games, Lasker's Games, Capablanca's Games, Nimzowitsch's Games, Alekhine's Games, and Keres's Games - choose one. Research their style of play first and see which you think matches yours

When you study, use an actual board and pieces. Having to reset the board many times and going through the moves again to get to the position after going through a sideline is very effective.

In those prime years of studying, I went from 1177 in March 1997 to 2001 in August 2001. Over 800 rating points in 4 1/2 years, but it takes acrual work, not 8 hours of trash games on chess.com.

CattlesRevenge -

NEVER EVER CONDEMN YOURSELF THAT WAY -- NEVER EVER -- NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!

You said: " . . . I broke down crying." and "I'm literally becoming suicidal . . . "

AGAIN, NEVER EVER VERBALLY ABUSE YOURSELF THAT WAY -- NO MATTER WHAT -- COMING FROM GOD AND ALSO FROM PROFESSSIONAL PSYCHOLOGISTS -- THAT IS SELF-CONDEMNATION -- IT IS VERY DESTRUCTIVE TO YOUR MIND, SOUL AND SPIRIT!!!

NO MATTER WHAT ANYBODY SAYS TO YOU OR ABOUT YOU, DO NOT EVER TAKE IT TO HEART!!!

One other important note, on this site -- Chess.com has literally over 20 million members, and you must keep in mind that there are even beginners (and those who say they are beginners in their profiles) WHO USE ENGINES!!!

I have the same feeling at the moment. I hit 1300 on Blitz a few weeks ago. Now I'm in danger of going sub-1000 again.

GM_chess_player

its natural for everyone to tilt, just a part of the game and the process of learning

Why would you think like that, CattlesRevenge? I don't understand why you think chess is like, a game that youy NEED to have a high rating on to be "Happy". That is not what you should think. The rating is just a number. "Chess doesn't correlate to your intelligence, it doesn't correlate to your self-worth. Let's get psychological for a moment. You're gonna lose like half of the games you play, if not more. Chess is a life-long process. I go to play tennis at the local park, I DON'T hit a 100% of my shots in. And I would never expect to, because I'm terrible at tennis. You have to be WILLING to LOSE!" - GothamChess

Sac-ROOOOOOOK

I have completed Pantheon 5 all Bindings in Hollow Knight. And I have beaten Sans in Undertale. Do you think I accomplished those goals I set out to accomplish because I NEEDED to succeed or else I would go crazy? I've accomplished those goals because I stayed determined and because I realized what I desired! That is what being a "God Gamer" is about! Is about knowing that with enough work and determination, one could have the ability to realize what you desire!

If you wanna get better at chess, which is a completely different story from video games, you need to find your own method that works for getting better! But please, don't give up! Stay determined!

I looked at your last few losses. Here are some suggestions.

1. Stop playing blitz and rapid. You don’t give yourself enough time to think. For example, you hung your queen without taking time.

2. learn some basic opening principles. I don’t mean trying to memorize sequences of moves. You are making basic beginner’s mistakes. For example, your opening moves are e3, d3, and Ne2. So, you are not trying to control the center and are developing your pieces so that they interfere with the rest of your development. This hands the opponent the advantage by move 3.

3. read some instruction books on how masters think and develop plans. A few weeks of reading some basic texts will be more helpful than playing blitz and rapid for months against other beginners.

4. Analyze your games afterward. Identify mistakes so that you can avoid them in the future. I don’t mean just letting the computer review the game and identify tactical errors. Think about plans. Why did you choose one plan? What other plans were available? Analyzing a few of your games in this way will be more helpful than hours of blitz against other beginners.

4. join an OTB club. Find some stronger players who will go over games with you. Pay attention to how they think.

@mikewier you misunderstand what I am trying to do. I made this account to play the cow opening exclusively. Tyler1 did it and went from 300 Elo to 1900 in a year, so it's possible. It encourages tactical vision. I used to play the Italian and French for white and black respectively but again I'd plateau quote quickly and face immense tilt and lose all my Elo.
