why cant i castle in this position

F8 is being scanned by the white queen on A3. The king can't put itself in check nor in a square it would be in check if it was moving one square at a time when it's trying to castle. This is a common tactic to prevent a person from castling.

That's an enlightening response. I didn't know about the one square at a time rule. I too had a game where it was a mystery to me why I couldn't castle on one move, but managed it afterwards.
