Why did my last ten minute rapid game end in a draw?

50 moves occurred and then my last ten minute rapid game ended in a draw. Did the game end in a draw after 50 moves or did it draw from repetition? I probably could have won sooner, and that is on me. Either way, why was my game a draw?

Thank you,

Game was drawn by stalemate. Black has no legal moves and is not in check.

The 50 move was just coincidence, and it didn't draw from repetition either. It was a stalemate.  I'll grab the article for you...

Thank you all. Was an embarrassing draw especially since my opponent was trash talking from move three, and I really wanted the win. You all are very helpful. I’ll check out the article and work on my endgame, so hopefully this doesn’t happen again.

Oh yeah, a stalemate. I taught my son about that last week, but I think this was my first one in a real game. Very helpful to think about it as a potential strategy when losing (or trying to win). Thank you!!!

The mindless trash talking is why I have stopped conversing during games. Especially for us lower level players, I think all our attention needs to be on the game.

Trash talking seems to be very rare from my perspective.  Can't recall it ever happening actually.  Maybe a little light hearted LOL or "Woops" type stuff but nothing harsh or rude.  Generally the chess community is pretty friendly!

The comments I saw early on were a bit rougher that LOL.   I would imagine the majority of players are friendly, but I'm on the site trying to learn chess, not for the 'witty' banter.

yeah

I just disable chat for my games. I like to lose in silence.

A bonus puzzle: instead of the fatal stalemate move, how many mate-in-1 moves did white have in that position?

Uh no guys, it’s called the 50-move rule - if there have been no captures and no pawn has been moved in 50 moves, a player can claim a draw (or in this case, draw is automatic). It’s to keep the game from going on endlessly.
