http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poole_-_HAL_9000 lists the game.
Kubrick might not be referring to an inaccuracies HAL made on the chessboard, but rather in his analysis - as the above link states, HAL playing black describes f3 incorrectly in descriptive notation (says QB3 instead of QB6), and in his final analysis fails to take into account that while can prolong the game for a few moves. It's still mate and an excellent game, but very subtle errors made by HAL possibly foreshadowed what was to come.
Ok! I'm really new here, so I'm glad to meet ya' ll!
In the movie '2001: A Space Odyssey', Frank Poole and the HAL 9000 computer play a game of Chess.
Has anyone ever analyzed this game? As a big fan of 2001, and a new player of chess, I paused the movie during the game and took a hard look at the chessboard. I set these positions up in Chessmaster to hopefully see it a little better.
According to the commentary, (w/Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood -woot!) - they say that Stanley Kubrick was a fan of Chess, and *he said* HAL makes an error in this game. I have been looking for the error that HAL made. I will post what I believe is the chessboard's set-up before Frank makes his move in the scene. It's possible that I am not seeing the pieces, clearly. And there-in lies a part of the mystery; if I have placed the pieces correctly!
So! If you are a die hard, 2001-geek person like me, or you love Chess, let me know if you've ever heard of HAL's error, and what it was, exactly.
Thank you!
((This is just with the chess game HAL and Frank play, not with all the other stuff that happens, later. lol))
