Beginner Chess Fun- How to Beat A Someone who Mirrors Everything You do.

NOTE: This post is just a fun one for absolute beginners.

I've had a situation a few times when I started playing chess against other novice players in which I was white, they were black.  Their strategy was to mirror every single move that I did.  Skilled players can easily dismantle this stupid crap, but beginners are often at a loss as to what to do.  If you are a beginner at the game and are stuck as to what to do against a person who does this, simply follow the moves in the diagram to:

1. Break the symmetry that the opponent tries to impose

2. Establish a strong board position at all points just in case your opponent tries to catch you off guard by going off symmetry.

If you are guaranteed that your opponent will mirror your moves, you can mate very quickly.

Ah, but what if your opponent breaks the symetry by taking queen with Bishop? Then you're lost!

Loomis

Let me write again what you quoted from me, with emphasis:

If you are guaranteed that your opponent will mirror your moves, you can mate very quickly.

right--but you're not. He could be trickign you

Ok, let me write it again with a new emphasis:

If you are guaranteed that your opponent will mirror your moves, you can mate very quickly.

I understand this is a different premise, than setting down to play someone who likes to copy your move.

Or if you're a GM you just do it like this.  http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1242914

you are lost if you mirror every move trust me.

BlueHazard

I don't think he will mirror you so badly that he will let you take his queen..

There are some very good traps to play against someone that mirrors your moves. You can check them out in Bruce Pandolfini's book Chess Traps and Zaps.

note:  that no player would ever do the same moves as the other player !!!this topic would only work if the other person was a complete beginner----also- even if the other person was a complete beginner this would( most likely not happen)-but still good 2 know stuff thanx!!!

I meet this 'mirroring' problem from time to time when I play the King's Indian Attack. And I'm not sure, honestly, at which point and in what way to break a symmetry in an adventageous manner... Any suggestions?

Ok this second game is dumb. This is not helpful advice. There is in no world you can ‘guarantee’ your opponents mirror your moves. And even if the mirror your moves for 99% of the game, doesn’t mean they won’t just take a free queen that you offer them. If they play like this, they are below beginner. Like it’s their very 1st game of chess or something. This is not educational for either side because you’re both blundering your first 2 moves to win.

At least if you’re going to show something like this, don’t make white the one who blunders a queen, make it so black is the one who blunders by following YOUR move. Like e4 e5, Qh4. And if they mirror, they blunder their queen for free.

Difference is you are FORCING black to not copy your move or THEY blunder the game. Not HOPING they copy your move or YOU blunder the game. One is FORCING, the other relies on LUCK. You shouldn’t be encouraging players to play with luck. Even if it is guaranteed, which I might add is highly specific and highly unlikely to ever happen to anyone at all. Makes bad habits even if it works that time.

With 1. e4 2. Nf3 mirrored - an easy Petrov trap after, 3. Nxe5 Nxe4 4. Qe2

I have a friend who is bad at chess, and their strategy is to copy everything exactly.
