I’ve been seeing these videos pop up on YouTube about this “Checkmate” painting by Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch. The videos I’ve seen allege that the painting depicts a man and the devil playing chess, with the man seemingly in a hopeless position, but a chess master saw a winning move for the man, illustrating a message of hope and perseverance. I’ve also seen videos suggesting “the king has one more move.” All these videos are heavy on the morale of the painting, but provide no analysis of the position. Unfortunately I cannot figure out which pieces are which because of the uniqueness the artist gives each piece. Has anyone dove into this in order to evaluate the position?
