Contest: Rename Vacation

There are many with a preconceived notion of vacation. They become agitated when they note players on vacation from online games but still active on the site.

A possible solution is for the site to adopt a vacation variation comparable to chess variations the caterers at Wijk aan Zee 2008 displayed.

A bit old but you can have a taste if you wish, as you think about your suggestion.

To the serious business at hand. Some possible vacation variations for your consideration, in order of political correctness.

A - Testing your patience

B - Doing something I like better

C - Game suspended due to higher priorities

D - On Hold - suggested by TheGrobe (2 votes)

E - Slacking - suggested by NickYoung5 (1 vote) - I fail to see the political correctness of this suggestion. As well some might say if you are playing you are slacking.

F - Doing something constructive, like watching TV - suggested by eddiewsox  (1 vote).

G - Postpone game - suggested by Fezzik (1 vote)

H - None of your business - suggested by PrawnEatsPrawn (2 votes) - again not politically correct.

How about simply "On Hold"?

"Vacation" has an existing connotation that implies that you're away, which I think is where a lot of the confusion comes in "On hold" is also a familiar term, however it implies that you're busy with something else.

Well, the word "vacation" implies that you are away, because you are supposed to be. 

Please use vacation time in an honest matter, when you are unable to move for an extended period.

That's why it will not be called vacation any more.

The leading contender is "On Hold" with one vote.

"Slacking" ?

There's little difference, though, between "holiday" and "vacation".  Might as well not change it at all.

Any and all abuse of "vacation variation" is allowed and welcome.

No, that one's just silly.  All chess is turn based.

I like "On hold" as well.  It's common usage to say that you're putting something on hold while you're away or dealing with more pressing matters.

 In the US they call a public day off a holiday, whereas vacation is you personal time off.  US folks get very confused if you dsay you are on holiday for two weeks. We in the UK and Ireland call both holidays. Unless you have a very easy job a business trip would not be a vacation :-)

I agree that "vacation"  here should probably be renamed.  Or the time per move rules should be explained to include the possibility of extending the time whenever you wish by use of "vacation" time or whatever it is called.

In Canada, they are interchangeable with respect to personal time off, but we too call public days off holidays and not vacations.  Holiday can be used for either, vacation is vacation (which you might use to take a holiday).

Holiday being derived from holy day?

I think that: "X is away temporarily" might be reasonable. But that could also look odd if they are actually on the site but doing something else instead of playing on the time control they had agreed to. Or maybe even using the vacation to get extra-thinking time.

H. "None of your business".

One thing that I have already learned in correspondence is to avoid playing with paying members with their "vacation" or whatever it is supposed to be called to make them feel better.

Instead of "vacation" what about "Inspiring more forums than the en passant rule"?
