It sounds trite, but how you feel is a choice.  You have no control over what happens, but you do have control over your feelings.  There is always somebody who is the better player, so winning is not as important as playing your best and learning.  Per the USCF:  "The PLAY is the thing."  Playing is an opportunity to learn about yourself and how you react to time trouble or finding the best move.  Win or lose, you always win if you are exercising the brain!  Don't take it serious, it's too mysterious.  Think about happy things like a baby's laugh or a beautiful flower.  Enjoy.

Ok Green Baret, people cannot control these types of emotions as easily as you make it sound.

The rest of your message is spot on though. Althoug you cannot really control how you feel, you can control what you do about those feelings.

Point well taken...however, if YOU cannot control your emotions, WHO can?

I think it comes down to whether or not a person feels a victim or a force.  The joke is, there are three kinds of people:  Those who make things happen: those who feel what happens; and those who wonder what happened.  This is an over-simplification, of course, yet there is a little truth and insight into living.  A person can see themself as a cause or an effect.  When you take full responsibility for an event or situation, you gain objectivity.  You see what really was your part and what was beyond your control.  You know this, I am sure.  So to return to the original question, "What do you do when you are sad," the answer is to process the emotion through the four or five stages of loss or grief.  1.  Denial.  2. Anger.  3. Negotiation.  4. Depression.  5. Acceptance, and eventually hope.  Without hope, what are you?  hopeless?
