Actually, it's 205.

The 204 mentioned, and the board itself.  There is a border, whether it be an area with 1-8 down the side and a-h across the bottom, or just a design that may be half a centimeter thick or a couple of inches think.

So there are 204 in the 8x8 play area, and the board itself, so it's actually 205 Squares.

that does not count as a square

EDIT: Sorry, this was posted by my brother

It does for some people. Personally, I would be happy to count squares not orthogonal to the board as well, but what good would it do? Tongue Out

Some chessboards have checkers on the other site, so 1x1+ 2x2 up to 8x8. +. 1x1 up to 10x10=589 squares + THE 2 sites on the boards= 591 and some chessboards have an extra square so maybe 592?

FireAndLightz

When u giving us the answer?

We have given the trophy and the answer, ThrillerFan got it right. It is 205

What planet are you on?

Ziggy_Kalashnikov

Redundant at this point, but 204.

Scottrf

Yeah, mine have curved edges, so no extra square.

Kudos to your brother for getting the right answer, you could learn from him.

It is a square, so it counts as a square.

Scottrf

Not always.

Besides, it says on a chessboard.

It is a square, so it counts as a square.

Except if it is a circle.

Go on Google Images and search 'chessboard', see the shape of the border on the physical chessboards

Okay, so you've just proved that the question should have been 'how many squares on a normal chessboard'?

Scottrf

It doesn't matter, the outside square isn't on the chessboard, it is the chessboard.

Almost to the point of spamming here, but this one is too pretty not to post:

If you hold up or down when looking at it, you get a brilliant optical illusion!
