After 2..f6 you have to play 3.b5.

MCO appears to disagree. There isn't a single mention of 3. b5, in the 14th Edition at least. I don't own the new version.

-----------++++++++++++

I don't have MCO!

I post my opinion and Search! And back to Russia 12 years and up, I generally remembered some Sokolsky's opinion from some his posts somewhere...

So, after my playing it a lot before, and now at chess.com, I think, it is good enough!

Nytik

Well, yes, it's definately good enough, all the way up to National Master level, as all opening moves are! Not the best, though.

I think 6.c4 is a big mistake here!
 I played regular e3, c3, d4...
AWARDCHESS

The Surprise Effect plus own big experience on own Opening base, when you know how to play a similar positions from that Openings, can give  you some big advantage, at any practical or correspondent games!

But, if you cannot execute your Advantages, because of your skills on tactics, strategy, plan, Ends techniques are very low, NONE of Openings is good for you...

AWARDCHESS

It is still a big Surprise Effect!

Most players play a few dozen games at times and up to a few hundred games, not does a half dozen, so one day per move is not enough to properly analyse that kind of totally  new problems and positions...

I have years of playing it, practically!

Well, you know how some people are about theory... But then there's always the fun factor in playing something odd every once in a while. I think 1.b4 is safer than the likes of 1.g4, 1.h4 or 1.a4.

===============
1.g4,
1.h4,
are very good, too!

1.a4 is good VS Erik! He will be happy to punish you for that! somehow...
AWARDCHESS

1.Nc3

1.c3

1.d3

are not bad, too, if you can play some good Chess!

So, it is no big matter, what you are started for... The Final will be a same winnig!

GMoney5097

Wow, you've played 1. b4 quite often!  That takes a lot of courage!  To play that and still win that many games is a remarkable feat; you must be quite the player!

This is another interesting Stats from chessgames.com

Black is doing well, here... Too good?

It is book and is White's best chance to keep equality.  Other lines are sidelines in which White loses space in the center and is subject to a pummeling and potentially winning attack.

White's king gets caught in the center and its gets ugly, fast.

Black has all kind of sacrfices at his disposal to take advatntage of superior development and strong positional advantages.

I am happy to play this line against you or anyone else and demonstrate how easy Black holds or even wins.  White has almost no chances of winning in this line against a modern player armed with proper info.  Even otb, this holds true except at the total patzer level.

Tim Harding in his Kibitzer's corner on Chess cafe had this to say about this line

"Black, in my opinion, should resist the temptation to get
involved in a direct tactical fight with White, i.e. he should
avoid all the 1 b4 e5 2 Bb2 Bxb4 and 2...f6 lines. Instead he
should play 2...d6 3 c4 f5 or, more likely, one of the
positional lines with 1...Nf6 2 Bb2 e6 in which the
downsides of the white formation are more likely to be
exploited."

And

"It must be played “with a rage to destroy” because if
White gets to about move 15 with a “normal” position and no
obvious disadvantage then he’s probably better. Black must do
something violent, such as 8...Nf4 or 9...Rxe3, to justify his
choice of variation."

I've been playing 1.b4 for over a year now and I personally prefer to see Bxb4 then some of the other lines against it.  But then again, perhaps I just haven't played someone with a "rage to destroy".

atomichicken

What's everyone's opinion on the 1.b4 d5 2.Bb2 Qd6 3.a3 e5 line?

AWARDCHESS

Contrary to this line, I think, that move a3 here is a bit waiste of time, and after that what white get plan to defense oneself, instead of attack!

Mainline_Novelty

in that line, AWARDCHESS, a3 is nessecary to defend b4. That is the excact same reason i play that line as black

Niven42

MCO doesn't analyze all the lines in openings like this because they are played so rarely at master level.  So yeah, you can't really say that the b5 move is bad, just that it isn't explored in MCO.

I like that dog.  Smile

Thanks for sharing AC!  I'm starting a b4 tournament soon, and this will be a big help!

True.  As someone that often plays garbage and junk openings myself, I hear ya.

But, I never pretend that when I play 1.Nc3 or 1. a3 that I am really going all out with my best possible chance to gain the point.

And, most significantly, I do not create threads on a chess site fallaciously extoling them, which is how I got caught up in all these shenanigens to begin with.

1.Nc3 is definately a league above 1.b4 or 1. a3. An extremely well received book was recently written about it (or recently translated from German), most reviews accepted it seems completely sound..

AWARDCHESS

I played 1.Nc3, since 1990...
