Sacking the King
by
King Bishop and the Squares
----
Some chess players tell a story
about how they sacrificed a pawn,
and if they sacked a knight or bishop,
well, they just go on and on.
Some sacked a rook, or even a queen.
That don't mean a thing.
Just listen as I tell you how
I sacrificed my king.
It was the 3rd of August,
in a year that ended in "1",
when I plunked down my money,
a more than princely sum,
to play in an exhibition
out on the chess club lawn.
A famous master from the east
was there to take us on.
The others in my chess club,
a bunch of simple fools,
all lost their games quite quickly,
by playing by the rules.
But not me, I play surprising strokes, and by move 25,
the master was just hanging on,
his king barely alive
I raised my hand to make a move,
concluding the attack,
when I saw a face in the gathering crowd
that made me put it back.
It was a young boy, not more than nine,
and I could plainly see
that the master was his hero,
or so it seemed to me.
I thought "If I defeat him,
this child will lose a hero,
and then replace him with some low-life,
some crook, or other zero,
then grow up in a twisted mist,
and spend his life in jail"
My duty is to lose this game,
in this I must not fail.
So I raised my arm again,
and I took my king in hand,
and moved it forward, right into
a patch of enemy land.
The master raised an eyebrow,
and there on the club lawn,
he accepted my king sacrifice,
shook my hand, and then moved on.

I had a winning move,
but I made one that was wrong,
to keep America strong!
