I was sitting in a restaurant a few months back while discussing a chess situation with a friend of mine. The conversation centered around my tendency to overlook obvious mates because I get distracted trying to promote a pawn. The game we were discussing had been played with a female aquaintance.
Me: "So that's when I missed it?"
Him: "Yeah, all you needed to do was move your bishop"
Me: "She always gets away, next time I'll get the forced mate."
Him: "You just get distracted."
Me: "I've got to learn to ignore my promotion opportunities and go after the mate."
It really didn't occur to me until later that well, maybe we should always call it checkmate :)
