Yes, there are many sites now streaming it for free. All he has to do is type into his google bar, "watch Pawn Sacrifice online free streaming", and many places will turn up depending on his country

Your ignorance does not constitute a defense. Almost every time a torrent link is posted, it is quickly removed and the poster is warned. Please find an example of a torrent link that was allowed to remain.

I assume that when they warn users for posting those links, they occasionally follow through, but I don't have a spreadsheet of the names of all the removed users. 

I've put streaming links up without being warned about anything. Whereas you have claimed people are booted for this. Maybe you're ignorant of the difference between streaming and torrent?

Well, he's absolutely right here. Streaming a movie is as similar as a cam recorded version. That's illegal.

I don't think it's illegal to watch a movie streamed through your computer. I think it's when you download the movie that you take possession of it and that could be considered illegal

Do you have the 'rights' to stream it? If you do, then it's legal. If you don't, then you're doing it illegally.  

Well, if you are a copyright holder, you have the rights. As far as I know, you do not own the copyright to "Pawn Sacrifice", so if you were to stream it, or otherwise acquire it without paying for it, you would be liable for damages to the company who made the movies.

Companies like chess.com that do not actively discourage users posting such links become big targets.

I know lots of people do it but chess.com removes the links and tries to discourage posting links like that because they could get sued by copyright holders. 

Haha It has more to do with copyrights than anything else. That's exactly what I wanted to share. 

I'm pretty sure you're wrong again. Sharing a movie is not illegal. I have a really long thread here where we share music. I have a movie thread where we also share movies. Chess.com has not done anything you said they do.

I once defended a college student who digitally shared music to which she did not have a proper license. Once you do this, you leave a digital trail you can't hide or erase. Copyright holders have become quite vilgilent about protecting their rights, and have whole firms of lawyers and computer geeks identifying illegal streamers and sharers. They pull a few fish out of their nets to prosecute all the time. They then cut off their heads and stick them on poles to scare others. If you're lucky, they will offer you a deal to settle for a few grand, plus whatever you spend on attorneys fees and laundry to clean your very soiled underpants. Or you can decide to defend, hire a lawyer, spend a hundred grand or more in attorneys fees, likely lose, and pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and fines. So I really wouldn't be flippant if I were you. I'd spend the $3.99 to rent the movie from Amazon or Xfinity and save myself one heck of a lot of grief. It does cost something to produce films like this, and I doubt that anyone is getting rich off of it.

Uh huh. That's probably why anyone on earth, even a lawyer, can google "free streaming movies or music" and find pages and pages of websites with tons of movies and music. They've been up for years, why doesn't anyone sue?
