POPULARITY OF CHESS IN YOUR COUNTRY

I agree 100% with socket2me.  Most people don't want to play a game that involves a lot of thinking, and most people think you have to be very smart to play chess.  So, they must tend to think that learning how to play is a waste of time because they're not smart enough, or else they don't want to put that much mental work into it.

Thinking too deeply about any hobby causes the interest to transfer in one's mind, to a different activity.  Thankfully, the majority of people (players i.e.) accept that the game is not there just to be won, but to be won or lost and enjoyed.

Which MATH equates to 60% lost.  Shows that NKT73 is a true sporting type

Hi Alll,

Glad to hear its popular in many country.

This game was originated from India but loosing its popularity day by day feeling bad to say this. most popular sport in India is Cricket. Lokking for any initiative, event or chance to make it again popular in India

Chess has progressed many fold in India since Fischer - Spasky match in 1972. We have now thousands of FIDE rated players besides hundreds of players with titles. We always win many medals in age group tournaments at Asian / Commonwealth and even world level besides Vishanathan Anand's world crown. So if you say that popularity of chess is going down in India that is against reality.

Chess in southern Ontario is pretty popular. There are many tournments and the number of people playing is expanding. But you would be hardpressed to find high school students that play chess really well.

I was born in Houston, and raised in East Texas, still live here (though I have nothing in common with the typical Texan). I finished school in a small-town high school, and in my senior year I had a fun math teacher, even gave us a sudoku game one time as an assignment (which I flunked, now I am an advid player of the game). Turned out he knew how to play chess, and he had a chess club, so I joined. There was, as I can remember, about 4-6 people there altogether. He taught me some basic things, as well as a fun knight game (though he also taught that once my king has been checked once I can never castle). We had a chess tournament that year, I remember winning all the pre-games, but the first game that mattered I lost (which I deserved it considering I was opened to my opponent's suggestion which gave him the win). It was in a cafeteria, four rows of tables, about four sets of folding-tables each row, with 16 stools each set. I would say that tournament led that cafeteria to be about a quater full. I would also have to guess that many that were there has never had a serious interest in chess, neither did I.

Even now, none of my family members play chess, except for my 15-year old brother in law, whom I taught and usually win against.

I would not say chess is very popular here in East Texas. We do not even have an official chess club anywhere near here, and I have looked and cannot find a single place to play chess with other people.

I can tell you that High School football is VERY popular here, but that just may be a southern thing. There are also at least one church every block, considering this is the bible belt as well. But no chess, unfortunately.

I have never seen someone summarize Texas in 3 sentences. Impressive... and so very true.

what is a typical texan? black dude from houston that works as a longshoreman?  south texas vaquero?  white dood from east texas that hates everybody and everything that ain't from wood county texas?  just asking

Alxndr

Well I am none of that lol

I can say this: I do not like country or rap at all, I do not have a Texan, much less a southern, accent, I do not say y'all and a'int like others here, I am not patriotic to this state or this nation, I am not a Republican (though I am not a Democrat either), I do not hate Muslim (though I do have a distaste for Islam), I do not believe liberals are the cause of the world's and the nation's problems, I do not believe just going to church and maybe saying a prayer here or there makes you right with God, nor do I believe people like prostitutes and drug-addicts and murderers and rapists can never receive forgiveness from God. I do not believe in the death penalty. I do not hate George W. Bush, but I do not make him into an idol either, nor the best President the United States has ever had. So on and so on...

Not saying everyone in Texas fits somewhere in what I typed, but it is very very common to find people here that fit in at least one thing of this list.

And may I also say I do not look like a Texan either, I look more like I have come from Ireland, and I do have an interest in Ireland and do hope to visit there one day. Plus I have a vocabulary that many Texans do not possess (not to call them ignorant in speech, but it does seem that there are some who are surprised by how I speak).

Two more things: I love poetry and I hate football and sports.

And I almost forgot to add the obvious: I love chess, simple as that.
