1) Can the pawns also move regularly in opening (e2-e4, etc.)?
2) Is there castling?
3) Can pawns promote?
4) If there was an black f pawn on f4 and white g2 pawn jumped to g4, is there en passant capturing? Which of the two white pawns does black take?
5) Have you actually played games of this? Can you post a PGN?
Greetings!
I introduce, here and now, Portal Chess!
First off, some introduction to those not familiar with Portal:
Portal is a 2007 FPS-style puzzle game by Valve Corporation (the makers of Half-Life). The Portal gun featured in that game creates a portal on any flat surface when shot at. These portals come in two colors, orange and blue. When the player or any object goes through the orange portal, they come out of the blue portal, and vice versa.
Now, onto Portal Chess:
While all credit for the Portal part of Portal Chess goes completely to the makers at Valve (thank you guys), and the Chess part to whoever created chess (a very big thank you to them too), Portal Chess is the innovation of my constant struggle of mine against boredom (एक चीज़ बताऊ? I hates going to parties).
It is basically chess with no Bishops, only one Rook and Knight, and fewer restrictions on movement because the chessboard will be considered sideless. Any Officer or pawn can go through the orange or blue portal (get it?) and come out from the other side.
Movement rules for the Officers will be exactly the same as that of regular chess; however, there is a slight modification in the capabilities of the pawn. As you might’ve noticed in the diagrams, there are two pawns of each color in the b- and g-file. The only modification is this: the pawns (b1, b8, g1 and g8) can JUMP over the pawns in front of them, but only on their first move. Similarly, the pawns (b2, b7, g2 and g7) can also jump over the pawns which have jumped over them, but only on their first move.
