The real-time aspect doesn't seem to work (just trying it for the first time, and it seems to play at 1.5 piece moves per second, with the timers not changing). Did the PGN files used to have the timing data directly within, or were they always scraped following the game link in it?

There's a checkbox with a clock that you can click just before downloading the PNG, then the PGN file should have the timing data.
I had some fun building an online chess tool a few weekends ago and I thought I'd share it with you.
The tool allows you to watch your old chess games in real-time. It's pretty cool to have a look at your endgames where time was low, or just some bullet games.
