Nice puzzle, but this game is the most awesome example of smothered mate (in my opinion). White, of course, could have avoided falling into the trap, but did not. I did not invent this trap Smile, but I did defeat two players (both higher rated than me) using it.

I recently pulled this checkmate off. Very fun.

Check it out.

Thats not a forced mate though because Black could take the Knight with the Rook.

It's not being labeled as a forced mate, it's labeled as a smothered mate.

Wrong. It's still a smothered mate. Granted, no one here would fall for it, but that position definitely leads to mate either way; if he takes the knight with the rook, then the Queen takes the rook, which really only delays mate.

But that there ending is a smothered mate.

Wrong. if he takes the Rook wuth the Queen Ra1#

 Sorry.

He wouldn't take the rook - he'd check with the Queen first, black blocks with that rook and loses when the queen takes the rook.

Not forced, but a cool smothered mate.

Black doesn't wanna lose material, so he moves Bd7.

If he does take the knight, white can play Qd8+ followed by taking the rook afer it blocks. If the queen takes the rook then he will be back-rank mated with Ra1#.

Relentless95

If you're talking about the first diagram, instead of taking the rook after it takes the knight, play Qb8+, followed by taking it.
