There is so much to explore in the world. You will not experience the diversity if you just play a game with someone from your own continent.
Some times it is better to play a game with someone from a different continent
then to watch movie or go windows shopping seeing things you need or you wish to own but you cannot afford

The good thing about chess is that it's universally understandible, even if you don't understand your opponent's langugage. The pieces still move the same, and checkmate is the same in any language.
If you want to explore what other cultures have to offer, dont sit in front of a pc playing chess justifying that yourself as a useful intellectual activity enabling you to embrace diversity... travelling and talking to people is the best way (beside reading).
