Analysis please

I'm not that good and I'd really like to get better so any analysis would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Why did you play Bf1-g4-xe7 in moves 7,8? It was an unnecessary exchange. Do not exchange unless you benefit from that.

13. Rfe8 was very good move, you did not get tempted by Nxd4 as allowing his rook to come to e7 would have lost you many pawns.

You missed knight fork at 26. Nd2, apart from that you played pretty well.

Yeah, Ill try to improve on all three of those points. Thanks for the help.

You should probably not give a ? to White's 18th move but to his 17th (if indeed you're going to give one at all).  These kinds of positions (with a potential wall of pawns vs a piece) are very difficult to read, and the most important thing is usually getting everything coordinated rather than a strict regard for material count.

White (it's true) did have the idea of 18 Bb4.  Black's best is then probably to take the knight and allow the 2 pieces vs rook trade after Ba5, when his position looks pretty promising.  He could instead still win the piece (with 18... b6), but after 19 Nxa6 Ra7 20 Bxd6 Rxd6 21 Nb4 White's pawns are starting to look formidable.

In the game White should play 19 c5, when Black's best is probably to allow the minor pieces vs rook trade again with 19... Rxc7 20 cd Rd7.  He looks to be better here, since White will have a tough time generating play.  If Black tries to hold onto the piece though with 19... Rd8 20 d6 Red7 he has a difficult struggle in store; even though White has only 2 pawns for the piece, they are very strong pawns indeed, and Black's cramped forces have little outlet.

First, Ithought white whole gameplan starting from 17. was pretty much a mistake.

Your second piece of information was very insightful. Thanks, it helped a lot.

Then what do you mean by "20 cd Rd7", I think it's a typo but I'm not sure exactly what i'ts supposed to say. All in all, thanks for the help.

I don't want to repeat what tonyday said, so I'll just add the following:

I don't like 6...Qe7+ at all. What's the goal? You're just helping White develop.I think 6..d5, claiming your share of the center is better

Did you consider 8... O-O-O instead of 8...Bxe2

You missed both 9...Nxd4! and 13...Nxd4!

White's whole plan starting with 16 Nb5 was an error

You missed a nice shot with 23...Nxc4

At some point, White just fell apart

First, instead of just saying that my move was bad, could you offer some alternatives? I know your just tring to help, but if you can't say what I should do, then you shouldn't be saying what I shouldn't be doing.

I see what you mean on move 8, but I just perferedd to castle kingside later in the game. I think it offered more protection.

I did not miss 13...Nxd4. Look, 13...Nxd4 14. Re7, and I lose some pawns.

I actually didn't like 8. Ba3, myself, or 14. Rd1.  Much better were 8. f3 (makes him move a piece he's already moved) and 14. Nd3 (Rd1 gives up the contest for the open file).  Other than that, very few mistakes in what is a challenging opening (the English)!

Not sure what you mean there...it's not a typo at all (20 cxd6 Rd7).

Oh, well you just said "cd", and I couuln't understand what you wer trying to say.

I'm sorry if I wasn't more clear.  6...d5! fighting for the center is better than 6...Qe7+ Even in the opening every move needs to have a purpose. 6...d5 grabs a share of the center and opens a diagonal for your king bishop. I couldn't see  the purpose behind 6...Qe7+ Perhaps I'm just missing it.

I may be missing something, but I think 13...Nxd4 14.Re7, Nf5 15.Rxc7, Ne8 is favorable for black, although it's complicated.

Yes, d5 would be much better.

But look: 13...Nxd4 14.Re7, Nf5 15.Rxc7, Ne8 16. Rxb7, oh right then Bxc3. Never mind I see what your saying.

Alex_M

oh ok. just never seen that before
