was taking his pawn worth not being able to castle? what is the  "text book play"  for the situation?

Yes, taking the pawn is by far more valuable than castling. 4. Nxe4 has the added tempo benefit of attacking White's Queen. Moving the Queen would lose a tempo for White, so he is somewhat inclined to trade to prevent that. With no Queens on the board, material is more valuable than the positional advantages of castling. It is highly unlikely that White will be able to mount an effective attack on the King in the center solely with minor pieces.

You should note though that after 6. Bc4 Nc6 White has an opportunity to win his pawn back with Bxf7. Better for Black would be something like 6. f5

Either i saw it right after i moved, or   i was thinking in my rating class i'd be able to get my knight to fork his castle and king without him noticing. thanks for the detailed explanation it was really helpful.
