is there change of rules coz my opponent ran out of time in this game:

http://www.chess.com/livechess/game.html?id=246934539

and ive lost a game on time i had queen against pawn this game has a theoretical mate possible when opponents idiot(same as i got said)???????

hint: I offered him draw 8 times where he declined when my bishop was protecting my pawn so was draw?

Chess.com approximates the draw on time by insufficient material rule, and I believe this case is one of the exceptions.

While technically, this should have been a win because there is a sequence of legal moves leading to mate, chess.com simply looks at the remaining material and estimates that there is not.

I suspect that the reason is because it's extremely difficult, short of employing a tablebase which is even then would not cover 100% of the scenarios, to determine programatically if such a sequence of moves exists.

Yeah, I'm confused too. As far as I can see, there is sufficient material to mate, so flagging should be a loss here.

It's just that the rule is imperfectly implemented here.  There's a thread somewhere that Erik started where he solicited feedback on how best to deal with the trade-offs.

maixx

can i report it somewhere or sth? kinda pissed tbh coz i lost like that

TheGrobe

Yeah, you can via the Help & Support link at the bottom of the page.  I'm not sure how much traction you'll get though.

Here's where the announcement of the change was made:

Looks like KB, KN and KNN are considered insufficient material regardless of your opponent's position.  I still can't find the thread where it was discussed at length though.

Found it -- here's the original discussion:

what i read out there from knn is if one side has knn not knp vs kn

P is pawn just incase :P

i know it was draw tbh but since move 45 i offered him draw 8+ times and he refused hoping to win on time(he had more time then) so i kinda want my win
