free?

scidVSPC ( http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net ) its very "old style gui", but have everything you need. Just add some good opensource engine ( Stockfish, Critter, Crafty, Fruit ), and hardly you will need anything more.

Commercial?

Shredderchess and Chess explorer (with Hiarcs 14)

Commercial products have nicer gui and probably are more easy to use ( comparing the 2 i mentioned im heavilly in favour for ShredderChess), but before spending money ill give Scid a try. I use it despite i paid for Chess explorer and deep hiarcs 14.

Note: ShredderChess classic have a demo that work for 30 days and elo capped to 1700. So u can try it for free before spending money. Once the month is expired you can also uninstal and reinstall it and you got another month ( the elo limit its just for his engine. If you add one of those free engines they will work at full power). Hi Thanks for the advice...I'm currently using ChessX - I think I should have asked a different question and that is "How do these chess analysis programs really work?"

Here's a screen shot of the one I use.  I get it to go through 4 lines, and I get that it goes to a depth of 20 moves deep.  But what does the +28 and that mean in from of the lines?  How can I tell who has the advantage, black or white?

Thanks again!

I have not tried ChessX software. I'm using Fritz 11 GUI. +0.28 means white has an advantage of 0.28 pawn. + means advantage for white. - black advantage. In Fritz, I right click the analysis and copy to notation. The analysis variation can now be replayed. Fritz programs and Aquarium are the best analysis software and used by the grandmasters.
