Computer vs. Computer Thread

In this thread I'll post games where I run a computer against a computer. I thought it interesting to see if the system that regularly waxes me would itself get waxed. Turns out that so far, it is getting waxed.

White is Chess Titans on (10). Black is Chess.com's engine on 1200. 1/14/13. Game finishes 0-1.

Their 1200 computer in play vs computer must be far better than the medium computer in live chess, which is normally rated a fair bit higher. The medium computer is appaling.

CharlesConrad

I notice that it doesn't take much longer for the piece to move. I like playing Chess Titans on 9, it moves fairly quick. But Level 10, it takes like 30 seconds a move.

1200 computer, 2000+ computer...moves fairly fast. I have a game vs the 2000+ computer too on an index card. It will be my next post.

About your comment on move 13 : this is because bishops are a (very very) tiny bit better than knights. I am not myself aware of it, probably because I mostly play closed positions, but on the average it is so. It depends highly on the position of course, so I guess the computer was given something like 1/10 pawn more value to the bishop than to the knight if the following lines seem equal.

Otherwise, it seems that the ridiculous-looking 25...g5 (between other moves) could be advantageously replaced by 25...Bg3 intending 26...Rf8, or am I missing something ?

CharlesConrad

I see it too. Even with the rook defense that bishop on g3 puts a clamp on e1 and f2.

CharlesConrad

Now the computers are tied. 1-1.

that chess titans is the worse engine ive played, suppose it wasnt ment to be anything but

CharlesConrad

That makes me laugh.

Because I don't have a good record against it at all.

Then I stop laughing and :(

Chregg

if you force it into closed , blocked positions, it gets lost and makes the stupidest of moves, try it

CharlesConrad

When was the last time you played it?

Chregg

last week i think, am a bit of a sadist with that app, if shit isnt going my way that day, ill put chess titans on at level 10 and slowly torture it, doesnt matter how powerful a pc you have it still plays like a patzer, pity you couldnt save pgn with the fooker, just to show you lol

CharlesConrad

If you don't mind me asking, how many years of series Chess have you done? I always get wide eyed at people making this "it's still a computer, you should beat it every time" line, which I took that comment to mean. I'd certainly like to get there, but I'm not there yet.

Chregg

i've been able to play chess since i was a young kid, lost interest, played here and there during my teens, and when kasparov beat deep blue in 96 i got my self a cheap chess computer (£30) and it took me a year to beat the machine at its strongest level (1200/1300 maybe elo) been playing chess computers now for about 17 years,,,, dont take me the wrong way, im not saying that computers should be taken for granted ( i have deep fritz 13 on a quad core machine) but the point im making  about chess titans is its not a well written chess application (opening book is basic and the algorithims aren't wat i call very refined), and the general wisdom of playing computers was always play a closed positional game cuz they are strong in open positions tactically, and thats where that app fails, closed blocked positions

Chregg

another tip as well, cuz a computer app is stronger than you, it doesnt mean you'll learn anyhthing from it, you only get better playing other people, but if you are gonna play old chess titans, keep it blocked, closed, aim for long term plans, out posts, weak isolated pawns and so on

Chregg

thats one of the things that drives me up the wall with the chess master app, you'll play some of the personalities at 1600 + elo, it will play a horrible positional game, you'll win, and then you play josh age 6 at 1200 elo and it plays a better game wtf lol

CharlesConrad

Ha, I'm bad enough vs level 5 and 6.

geonikia

what is rating of chess.com engine on android?

"In this thread I'll post games where I run a computer against a computer."

Can anyone show me how to do that? I have a certain position that I would like to see the computer play against itself.

Some engines like Arena Chess GUI and Math is Fun will let you play two computers against each other. Otherwise you can play in two different windows with different colours and manually play the computer's moves.
