Hello everyone!  I was just wondering if it is safe to download a free pgn reader from the internet?  I want to make sure that there is no chance of acquiring a virus with it!?  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thank you.

How would we know? You haven't even named the site.

You'll have do your own assessment of the site.

There are two good free ones on SourceForge ChessX  https://sourceforge.net/projects/chessx/  and PGN ChessBook at https://sourceforge.net/projects/pgn-chessbook/ which I use because it comes with Stockfish out of the box and has a simple GUI

Hi! Regarding your PGN ChessBook - Do you know if it works with Windows 7? I know Win 7 won't be around much longer, but I'm not going to Win10.

You never know for sure what you are actually downloading from just about any site on the net. Be very careful and have good anti-virus software running.

True, you can almost never know for sure. There are a few things you can do to tip the scales in your favor.

1) A widely used program is better.

2) Open source is better (because it has the ability to be audited).

3) If you can get comfortable with the programmer behind the software, that's better.

4) A good report from VirusTotal can give you a warm, fuzzy feeling, although this doesn't guarantee that the software is virus free.

5) Always download the program from the original, official source. If a checksum value is given for the file(s), always verify that the checksums match.

About the only ways that you can know for sure that a program is virus free is that if you wrote the program yourself, or if you're a programmer and you go through every line of the source code and compile the program yourself.

Hi guys, please help me, how can I download the PGN?

ChessEnthusiast48
There is a free app Chess Viewer you can download on your iphone. You can download games from pgn mentor website to view the games. It comes with analysis engine too.

LucasChess. Play games against 50+ engines, board set up, analysis (like Review with various scores), PGN import/export, database management, advanced search, endless pieces/board customization possibilities. Free. Best of the best.

ChessBase Reader. ChessBase is typically paid but this is a limited functionality version (read-only) and it is free. You can paste PGN or you can open a fat PGN file with this program and view games in it. Has Fritz 11 SE and you can also add any other engine like Stockfish so you can manually analyze moves and explore variations. Has training mode to learn games (but LucasChess has it too). You can't play against engine there, only by looking at Kibitzer panel maybe.

Chessbase online PGN reader:

https://pgn.chessbase.com/

Free. Click ||| icon for menu to open your PGN. Has more features compared to standalone ChessBase Reader program. You can jump to online Fritz from any point in the game.
