How could i have won this?

Hey you all...I am just finish playing a game with a very nice guy, and good competitor...All credit to him.

In the end we came to this position. I felt i had a slight advantage, but i struggled to come up with some good moved to win the match. We agreed to draw, but i felt this position could have given me more.

I played white.

Can i win this position, and if so, how? (and was i cowardly of me to request a draw?

)

You should have finished that game.. not only because you would have won (IMO) but mostly because by finishing that game you would be learning more... Requesting that draw seems to show you were afraid... don't be afraid when you're up material.

First move... fork the king and a4

Thank you for that comment. Yes you can probably say that i got a little afraid...i some times think way to much about my rating, and therefore i dont take the "risks" or dear to try getting the winning moves...i know that is not very good, and that i have to stop doing that...I got the chess.com`s computer anaysis back now, and it showed me that i have mate in 26 from this position...i would really like to see the solution...

You could have won as follows....

i'm not so good at endgames but here is what i see next... black will push pawn and king to promotion. just sacrifice your knight for that last pawn and then race that pawn up the board (of course im sure there is a way to not sacrifice the knight, and if you do make sure the black king is out of the square of the pawn when he takes the knight) can't have him beating the pawn to the bank rank!

Thank you...now i see how easily that could have been done...i should have use longe time thinking about it...I have really learned my lesson here...

as i was writing that simon diagrammed it out (pictures are better than words)

Simendo

Yes...but you have helped me realise that i have to stop worrying about points and ranking, and just play, learning and finding winnings moves, even if it means i sometimes will get it wrong and loose:) Thank you all again for your support and help.

Hjertelig takk lattas...Dette var til stor hjelp, og jeg ser jo nå at jeg i det minste burde turt å spille springeren til c5, og vunnet etter det. Takk for at du tok deg tid til å forklare:)

littleman

Yes u did an easy endgame win.

Dokiel

You could simply have boiled an egg and won that way!

This Endgame is totally won for White. Because of the knight fork, you will gain an invaluable tempo in the Endgame (Sometimes this is enough to win!) and also immediately made your knight disposable; because you can sacrifice the knight for the pawn and still queen.

I agree with both post you could won, but if time was a factor it's hard to come up with a good plan.

This was not a matter of time...i think i just was a coward, and thougt more about how bad it would be to loose(and i did not se how to win it right away), rather then going for the win...I am trying to stop doing that kind of stuff, and dont think that much about rating points...
