How is this a stalemate? Isn't it supposed to be a checkmate??

I have the white king cornered in every direction. He can't move left, right, diagonally, or upwards. So, why is this considered a stalemate and not a checkmate???????

CiciRettu

cause is not even check, and he can't move any piece in his turn, so without a moves to do and without a check he can't do anything. in this situation is stalemate

damn that an annoying rule

but u can move other pieces

thunder6131

it is only stalemate if nothing can move

You aren't putting the king in check.

Also, why did you promote 2 more queens? The more queens you have, the more likely the game will stalemate. You can checkmate with one queen. Why did you not do that?

BOWTOTHETOAST

Instead of Qa7 you could have done Qa8+, King c7, Qb7 mate.

I can agree. Most of the time, one extra queen is helpful, but three is just too many.

You also could've moved the queen left two squares to score a mate instead of moving it down.

This is a joke, of course.

If I had moved the a7 Queen to b8 instead, that would have forced a checkmate, right?

If you've been on this site for 2 years, shouldn't you be used to that rule and have learned that it makes sense?

I mean, I made my account 2 years ago but I never really used it

Only starting to properly learn chess now

heylitha2008

by the way, Qc1 was just mate

also it's stalemate because the king isn't threatened to get captures. google up the wikipedia article on stalemate.
