How to understand moves evaluation

I apologize in advance for my noob question: Engines show me moves evaluations from about -15 (I tried a move killing my queen) to +? for each move.

Can someone send me a link to a detailed explanation about those quotations?

Computers evaluate the "position" and determine which side is winning and by how much. Values which are positive (+) are winning for white and negative (-) are winning for black.

The unit of measure is something called "centi-pawns" which is the computer trying to assess the position in 1/100ths of a pawn! If a position is 100 centipawns better for one side, then that is the same as saying that side has an advantage worth about a pawn.

Examples:

-3.50 is a big advantage for black where they are up about 3 and a half points

+1.00 means white is up about one pawn and a slight advantage.

+0.00 means the position is evaluated as equal.

+5.00 would be a really big edge where white is up by about a Rook (5 points)

M3 "M" in number means forced checkmate in that number, so white having M3 means they have a forced checkmate in 3 moves with best play.

Hope this explanation and examples help happy.png

Yes, it helps!

As an additional example:

If I well understand this means if black play d6 (first case) they "win" 0,63 but if they play a6 (2nd) they loose 1.06, so a difference of 1.69 between 2 moves (!) however a6 is not the worst move.

Remark for other noobs happy : Minus quotes have a black backround as positives a white one.

Thanks!

It looks like you are understanding it better, and I will try to explain your specific example a bit more. If black play d6 then they are up by about half a pawn which means they have a slightly better position, but anything under 1 pawn so + or - 1 is relatively equal although at higher levels it can lead to bigger advantages that lead to a win for the side that is up half a pawn. At lower levels of chess a half pawn advantage is relatively equal although the side with the half pawn advantage may have easier play. In the above picture you have the computer will show anywhere from the top 1 to 5 moves and best line to follow up that move. In this example you have one clear move that is better than the rest being d6. If black plays Ba6 instead of d6 then with correct play on both sides then white will be up the equivalent of a pawn (it may be a position advantage that will eventually lead to a full pawn advantage, but it may be 20 moves down the line). Hope this explains it a little bit more.

Per GM Larry Kaufman:
> 0.7 white wins
between -0.7 and 0.7: draw
< -0.7 black wins

Is that a position where black has an extra pawn are not told as the best move? Or is it enough that black is the better side? That is when black has the extra pawn in the king side, e.g. in the 0-1 main line with a bishop on c7. In such a case you want the good side to always move. It is very common that a position where one side has an extra pawn is not told as the best move. I’m not sure why though. This is a very minor example though. If one side has an extra pawn and the other side has one less pawn then white would still be the better side because the difference is rather small. It does not strike me as a sharp position that you could make solid/exciting calculations and determinations from. So don't pat yourself on the back just yet, though you are trundling on the right track (or square bwahaha)

DesperateKingWalk is probably just trolling. Very few things in that post make sense, and nothing in that post is related to this topic.

Personally I translate to pre-computer evaluations:

0 - 0,39 = equal

0,4 - 0,99 = plus/advantage

1,0 - 1,99 = clear/big advantage

2 - 100 = winning

material, king safety, piece activity, pawn structure, position without queens. Are the 5 different categores needed for evaluation....
