I'm a relative beginner who accidentally beat the Play Magnus app at age 29

Hi everyone,

I'm curious if anyone else has had the same experience of accidentally beating the Play Magnus App at age 29, even though being a relative beginner. I played black and Magnus resigned. I have a screenshot as well but it seems I can't upload it into this forum. I play the App on a Samsung Galaxy phone.

I only play chess with the Play Magnus App rather than with other humans, at age 8. I blunder often because I like to play many games quickly, 5 minutes max. Usually I win about have the time, lose or resign the other half. Age 9 I can sometimes win, but only if I concentrate a long time. I've tried age 10 but always lost. Even though I play about a few games every day at age 8, I don't consider myself a skilled chess player because I don't know much about openings or chess theory.

Yesterday my kids asked me how quickly I would get beaten against the highest level, age 29. I was also curious so I gave it a try to see how long I could stretch the game before losing. I played as quickly as normal, to have the game take 5 minutes max. I noticed that the App seemed to play more quickly than at age 8. After a while I gained a 1 and then 2 pawn advantage, still confident I would lose. Apparently I didn't make any obvious blunders, which I sometimes do. And after a while I gained a knight advantage. And to my astonishment I ended up winning the game.

Did anyone else have this experience? The app certainly started strangely, moving back and forth the rook and queen. I'm sure I didn't accidentally play a genius game, as you can probably see by the moves I made.

Was it an app error? Hardware error? A user error?

Or just a troll post?

The answer doesn't really matter. White played badly.

Your account is 4 hours old, and this topic has been done countless times before.

No serious person will post here... so maybe you'll get many replies.

I'm drunk.

I think that sums it up pretty well.

Someone else posted on these forums with the same experience..  I guess it is an app glitch

Especially when the person who created this topic has fake stats

So uhhh, do you ever play other people online?
defenderpug
Because I think ur account is generally new, and I looked at your stats one bullet, blitz, 960, etc, and clicked on from year. And no games have been played. Plus it’s says that your best stats where today. And can bot personalities resign?

Tell your user name at play magnus app. I will search your profile if you won any advance level or not... cause age 29 can't have an accuracy b/w 20-35

I do give the OP credit for trying to reinvent the wheel again.  The "I am new to chess, but somehow beat a strong engine?"  Hasn't been done in awhile.

Qxc4 does not make much sense.

no way this game was magnus age 29

Something is up in the Magnus app, my 12 yr old son who is just learning chess and plays on the app against Magnus age 5-7 , decided to try age 29 for kicks and halfway through the game Magnus resigned, my son is 3 days into learning chess.  Some sort of glitch.

Thanks protecto, your experience confirms what I saw as well. I've beaten 29 Magnus multiple times now, it plays way too quickly and blunders all the time. I have a harder time with 8 year old Magnus. Sometimes though, when 29 year old Magnus takes time to "think", I lose easily.

Regarding the other comments: I'm not a good chess player, so the point I am making is that the software seems to have glitches (sometimes). No need to believe me, but you can give it a try if you have the Play Magnus app

I don't log in to the Magnus app so I don't have a user name. I could post a screenshot of me winning, but it looks like I can't do that here.

If the app has a glitch I guess you will find many people beating age 29

Update: Just logged in, my profile name is dk20. I played 1 loss and 1 win against age 29 with my mediocre chess skills (also playing very fast), I guess you can now see it in the stats? I may play some more later.

You claim to be new to chess, eh? Why did you play the best possible move then? I am a pretty good player, and I know a master when I see it. either you are a pro or you are using stockfish.

I'm not exactly new at chess, but I play at a beginner level (in my view). I tried lichess for two weeks or so, with my rating hovering between 1200 and 1400. I think I'm way too impatient to become a good player. I think everyone makes a "best move" once in a while, for example when you trade pieces.

Looking at the game think it may just have been age 2 and not 29. Might be the problem here

I don't claim to be a master, but when I look through the game, I see many missed opportunities for both sides. I do not think that black was using stockfish. Stockfish, the materialistic computer it is, would have saved the pawn on d4 say on move 16. As far as ratings go, I feel like I am more justified than you at making a decision on this. I do think this is a bug of some kind.

Magnus doesn't move his queen that much early
