In a computer analysis, +/- means what?

I had a few of my games analyzed by the computer and can understand where I made mistakes.  My question is, what do the plus/minus numbers mean in the text box?

A plus means it is that much better for white, a minus means it is that much better for black.

Hi,

+= White is slightly better

=+ Black is slightly better

+/- White is better

-/+ Black is better

+- White is winning

-+ Black is winning

Regards.

^ above is for human analysis, very useful symbols. Also one can use ± and ∓ instead of +/- and -/+, as well as similar symbols for += and =+.

Now, the OP's question: You see odd numbers like +2.01 and -4.55 beside each move? Simply put, 1.00 is about the value of a pawn. +x means white is ahead and -x means black is ahead by that value x. (Unless you use the other option of +x and -x both referring to the side that's to move, which is more confusing sometimes.)

About -0.50 to +0.50 is just about equality. -2.00 or +2.00 is a significant (dis)advantage for one side, and -3.00 or +3.00 should be quite winning. Also, don't trust this site's computer analysis (it's quite inaccurate at times) and also take any engine's evaluation of openings and endgames with a large bag of salt.

Hi I've been wondering too.  Can you explain please in a bit more detail   eg '=+ black is slightly better'  =+ what?  sorry - I just still don't get it.  The only bit which I think I now understand is..... + is good for white, - is good for black.  I

@AliMcK

+= means white has slight advantage like better material development and gaining space.

+/- means white has big advantage(extra piece, decisive extra pawns)that you still need to convert into winning with precise play.

+- means white is completely winning.e.g. 1.You have an ending with an outside passed pawn that is going to be a queen in no time. 2.Positions where mate is inevitable for opponent.

Thank you.  What about....

QH3 is a blunder    -M9         ?

Strangemover

left is white and right is black:

+- white is winning -+ black is winning

1-0 white wins 0-1 black wins

1. e4  e5

(whites moves blacks move)

you are correct in the point count however, when black is winning the points are in the negative.

In a nutshell

+ means white is better

- means black is better

This mean black can mate white in 9 moves, if +M3, this mean white can mate black in 3 moves. + is for whites, - is for blacks

Knight1988

does + mean that white overall position is better? or only the last move?

It's always the overall evaluation of the current position.
