Is there any point in holding a chess night

Most Universities will have players well above 1000.
My old High School never had a problem dredging up 6 players that strong, each year.

If you have friends who would be interested, then I say go for it! Don't worry about your level, just have fun with it!

If you want to start a club, go ahead. All clubs need dedicated organizers. In fact, they are the club. When they leave, clubs usually die.

I'm kind of obsessed with chess at the moment and have this idea of having a chess club thing at my university. Thing is I'm not a good chess player, my rating is just above 1000 on Chess.com, so I'm hardly teacher material. That said, I'm clearly better than my friends and definitely could teach them something. I just would teach them technically incorrect things.
Do you think I would be wasting time trying to teach them, or should they start by learning from someone like me and start going more serious about it if they want to?
Thank you,,...
Sounds like fun and if I was there I would love for someone to help me out. I say go with it and have some fun.

If you can't play well above the 1000 level how did you even get into university?
Let's see - maybe because he's met the entry criteria that has zero relation or correlation to chess? Crazy idea, I know.

Of course there is!!
Share your enthusiasim! Also the one of the best things about games is meeting and making friends.... So go for it!

Personal experience, yes people will come, if you advertise it properly.
Six or eight used to come at my relatively small school only a few years ago. Well into the internet age, so that isn't a problem. Make it easy for people who live in the dorms because they are the most likely to be looking for something to do and not want to have to drive.
Just make sure to be prepared. You need to have some boards and stuff in case people come without any. Your student union (recreation center, or whatever you call it) probably has boards to check out.
Also remember, you are kind of responsible if someone comes along and says "I came to learn chess." Because now you are in charge and it wouldn't be right not to help them. So then maybe you don't even get any games that day if you have to spend it teaching a noob.
But yeah, go for it.
