ChessX is good and so is Arena. Both are open source and being maintained, as well as free of cost -- though they don't mind donations :-)

I can't spend big bucks on all the latest and greatest chess software. So I found a copy of Fritz 12 on Ebay on the cheap. I like the way it can look up previously played games in databases. Also I like the way it presents ideas not just moves. Below see an example.

I spend probably more than I should on software, but I save money by using SCID vs PC (free database), My paid programs include Chessbase 11 (used), Bookup I mean "Chess Openings Wizard", and of course my membership at chess.com. Hmmm I guess I spend more than I realized. I run free chess engines on SCID vs PC. Stockfish Komodo and Fire.
If I'm analyzing myself I like to check those as I go, but they only show me better moves. They don't give reasons. So I thought someone might want to look at the Fritz analysis in the link above and let me know what you think. Also I'd like to hear what you use. Are the newer versions of Fritz a lot better at this?
