New category of blunder: Missed opportunity

Hi chess.com,

I love the game analysis it really helps me, but it is a bit confusing when it says things like O-O is a "Blunder" because I missed a much better move, such as capturing the queen. What would be great is to keep the category "Blunder" for when you make a bad move and introduce a new red category called something like "Missed Opportunity" for when you do an okay move but there was a game-winning or game-saving move that you should have done first.

So, yes, this kind of "Missed Opportunity" is a kind of blunder, so it should be in red, but it is different from making a bad move (e.g. a move that gives your queen away) and it would be nice if the game analysis noted this difference.

The commentary already says things like "you missed an even better move" or "this was a missed opportunity", but it would be nice for this to be reflected in the name of the category of mistake as this would help everyone see this difference at a glance.

Many thanks,

Leo and Oli

What about "missed win"?

ShuckleSquad13

That is already a category.

Yeah, "Missed Win" is already a category and it is a useful description of what kind of mistake you made.

But it feels like "Blunder" is actually just a level of severity of how bad the consequence of your choice of move was, but it would be nice to somehow distinguish if it was a blunder of how badly you moved the piece, or a blunder of missing something else that was crucial to do first at that moment.

a missed win is usally a missed chance to win material or a missed chance to win, and a blunder I think is if you give up material or mate

I think that the lines might get blurred some times

Objectively there are only 3 categories:
mistake (?) turns a drawn position into a lost position,
missed win (?) turns a won position back into a drawn position,
blunder (??) turns a won position into a lost position.

Missed win = Missed opportunity?
