Remove analysis board

Is there a way to remove the analysis board from daily chess and daily tournaments?

I find it takes away from pure chess game play.  Some people just spend ages examining every variable on the analysis board instead of using their brain to find the best move.

It's not always a bad thing.  An option to play a game without it would be good though.

Using the analysis board (or any board without an engine) is using your brain - it's about going through variations and evaluating the resulting positions.  Using the analysis board doesn't intrinsically save people; we all know someone who went down a 20-move variation just to overlook a simple tactic early on.

Also, think about how all past correspondence chess was performed - by using a physical analysis board to try out ideas and variations.  Many people still use physical boards for correspondence/Daily chess today.

There should be a possibility to turn off the analysis board for both players in correspondence chess. The Chess Time-App offers this important feature and it should be implemented here too.

It should stay there, but why not offer the additional feature to turn if off?

Because it gives much more an „over-the-board-feeling“ and both players have to play the game in their heads. One can like it or not - just an additional feature.

Daily chess is not supposed to give over the board chess feeling. It is basically a copy of old correspondence chess, where you in Germany for instance have the board in front of you, and you mail your move to someone in France or England who has their own board in front of them.

That is why daily chess is the way it is.

Of course, you can treat it like over the board chess if you wish to do so, but generally if you want to play chess with OTB feeling, you should play live chess with longer time controls (if you want to have a lot of time).

This is all well and good, but why not offer an additional feature?

I see your point. I guess they never bothered because correspondence chess has its own rules and it was never meant to be played as OTB chess. For instance, not only analysis board, but opening explorer is allowed in those games. From the rules:

  • You may use Opening Explorer or other books without engine evaluations in Daily chess only (not in Online / Live play)

That being said, it is not a bad idea, more features are always good, and this one sounds reasonable to me. One slight complication I see is that games would have to be unrated with that feature, so they have to think about that as well, but it is certainly doable.

They don't really read forum too much, so the best way for them to consider your request is to make a suggestion to them directly. Hover over help in the bottom left of the screen and choose "Make a suggestion".

Many thanks for the hint - „Make a suggestion“ is a very good idea.

You're welcome. Have a great day.
