Resign vs Checkmate

On the subject of affecting my rating.....which would affect my score more....resigning or allowing an inevitable checkmate on me. And vise versa....If an opponent of mine resigned would it affect my rating differently than it would if I had checkmated him?

I was always under the impression that, all other factors equal, your score would be affected in the same way if your opponent resigned as if your opponent was checkmated

your question makes me think of baseball, whether you are called out on strike three or went down swinging. In both cases you are OUT!Cry

No, it does not matter if you resign or get checked mate, you lose the same amount of points. However, if you are a rating-whore you must take into account time as a factor. If you see your opponent has unfinished games with others where he/she will win, you should postpone your game as their rating will climb with time and thus your loss will be less (same goes Vice Versa). Also, if you are playing other games where you most likely will win, resign as fast as possible! This will lower your rating and therefor give you more points when you beat the other opponents, thus you climb more in rating. This is what I have experienced here on Chess.com, though I do not think about my rating that much (although this post might show something else..). There are some other factors as well, but I don't want to post them here. My final words: Don't think too much of your rating: The only thing that matters is having fun. (Yeah.)..

This might be a tad impertinent of me, but I say if your position is bad enough that you are faced with this particular choice, you should always resign, so as to not waste your own and opponent's time by having him play out the position over another couple of days. This is a bit different in blitz, if your opponent is short on time you can swindle a draw or even a win if you play on in a hopeless position.

Well, if you care enough about your rating, you can calculate stuff as ypperlig said I guess. I'd feel bad being annoying to your opponent for that kind of reason. It's just being a sore loser.

But then, I don't have a thing for correspondence chess at all. I'm a live chess person.

I heard chess.com has a tiny man inside a computer and that he is the utmost expert in chess aesthetics. This man keeps track of all the games played in the server and the rating changes consider the beauty of the game. You may lose points with an ugly win of gain points with a beautiful idea gone wrong and a loss.

Anyway, regarding your question, your rating change will be the same regardless of how you lose Tongue out
