resistance with the 4 move mate

i figured it was worth a shot, however it was resisted a little bit... i'm lucky it ended this way or i would have had terrible position..

any suggestions on how i should have played it after the resistance?

5.bg5 was to try to get him to move his pawn.. guess he was smarter than that for a bit :p

later i got him to swap knights with me so i could get my queen back in position.. it was open and i got it..

risky, but fun.

Bad moves on both sides.

My suggestion would be to not play the four move mate and avoid the resulting bad position altogether

5.Bg5 was a bad move on your part, better was 5.Ne2, leading to 5...Nge7, 6.Bb3 a6, 7.Qh5+ g6, 8.Qh4 Bg7 9.Bh6 Bxh6, 10.Qxh6 (preventing black from castling).  6.Qh5+ was another bad one, though not as bad as 5.Bg5, better would've been Qd1, letting black take your bishop.

I tried to throw in a board for you to see the variation, but for some reason the system won't let me make the move 7.Qh5+, but it ends up looking like this...

And white is slightly better.

thanks for all the constructive criticism Undecided

keep in mind this is the second game i've played in probably close to half a year and it was a quick game.. which usually leaves the move making up to the subconcious :p which in my case is probably quite untrained since it's been so long.

and psilohead, if the game were to turn out that way it would have been a game won on time.. winning on time is never fun.. all or nothing ;)

and for the record... suggestions do not include statements as unintellectual as "bad moves" etc.. that's pretty much just an undermining statement.. you didn't give any insight into what moves were bad (and now i'll wait for you to say all of them ;))

why doesn't anyone like the 4 move mate? it's fun when it works.. it doesn't even give good position if it fails.. and it forces you into a challenge considering playing in positions that it leaves you in is never easy... if you don't enjoy a challenge than your life must remain as dull as you.. try to have more fun :)

Its just that when you bring out your queen too early, you set yourself up have it chased about the board while your opponent develops and a better opponent will be able to use that development to their advantage.

Yes, I admit that it is fun every once in a while to trick your opponent with an opening trap, but if you start relying on these traps, you will realize that your opponents will have better and better refutations, which leave you in worse and worse positions.

i don't disagree with you at all. i know you set yourself up for a positional battle which you also set yourself up to lose.. but when playing against low rated people in quick games chances are they'll slip up (just like in this case) and leave an opening for an early mate..

i played one game as black before and opened with kings indian.. and i had the position battle won from the beginning, and barely got to end the game before time ran out.. after judging his poor positional play i figured it was worth a shot (and guess what.. it was). our last game he opened with d4 and i challenged him with d5 considering i figured he wouldn't be able to react too well (especially considering they were quick games)..

i played 3 fun games today, and after judging your opponent sometimes it's worth the risk if you think they will react poorly to a certain situation

I see where your coming from, and if your playing for fun or with some friends or don't mind your rating dropping a few points (if you lose of course), then hoping for a blunder by your opponent can be ok. But, as a rule, you should never play a move or opening hoping for your opponent to play poorly.
