Sound move or premature...

Following is a pos. I frequently find myself in. In this particular example, it's my move, and though I'm black here, I encounter it as white as well.

So, my thinking is take the f pawn, most times with my bishop to force a white response but if the h pawn hasn't come out, I'll lead with the knight provided the queen hasn't been developed. If white trades off, I've captured a pawn and a rook & lost a knight and bishop. Plus, I've forced white to bring his King out to f2. If white decides to not trade, I'll retreat having lost nothing and I've still forced his King into a corner and captured a pawn lead.

So, as the topic asks, sound play or a premature attack?

ps. I have about 4 "current" games where I've played through this so please keep any answers general. I've tried to wait till I was at least 5 or 6 moves past the situation. If this is still too close for an answer, I can wait.

Thanks

Usually this is better for white I think. Although the 2 minor pieces are worth 3+3 = 6 and the Rook and pawn are also worth 5+1=6, really, having the two minor pieces is going to be better during the middle game at least. Rooks are very rarely better than 2 minor pieces until the endgame.  White loses tempo with the king capturing rook(because it has to be moved home again) but it cost black tempo to get the knight and Bishop into position to make the exchanges. Also you can see that blacks kingside has become pretty bare for defence and white has a lot of open lines towards it and pieces ready to invade.

If black was getting a Rook + 2 pawns or an attack with this exchange then I would sometimes play it but without further compensation I think the exchange is very rarely good.

If its Black to move (which it is i believe.. or else white can just take the knight)

I would play.. h5, creating a deadly attack.

Even in the endgame I would prefer the bishop/knight combo to the rook and pawn. Serbian's move is pretty good at first glance, since the queen can come out once the white knight moves. I'd prefer h5 to Nxf2.

 Its nice that someone agrees,

In a game in real life, i took the knight thinking YES! Free knight and i think i will be able to hold the defense against accepting his knight, but i was wrong.

I will show you an example of what can happen.

4... Bc5 kills White off quicker in your line.

But it shows h5 is dangerous. I think White must give back the knight to survive.
