Using analysis on daily (or longer) games.

Hello all,

I usually play rapid games of 1 hour. However, I occasionally play 'daily' games and have just noticed the 'analysis' button which you can use during a game. It's great to play around with different moves during an actual game, but it feels like cheating. Of course, I could just choose not to use it, but it's fun and addictive and staring straight at me on every game.

I'm wondering if daily games are just a different style of game? I.e. a game where you are actively encouraged to explore different moves?

Thanks :-)

I think it’s just down to trusting the person you play. There’s no stoping someone from using another engine off of chess.com while doing a 15:10.

Fundamentally you’re only cheating yourself.

Completely agree mhoshi. However, I'm not talking about using an analysis where the computer tells you if you are in a better or worse position, that would just be cheating, and as you rightly say, you would just be cheating yourself, which is absolutely pointless.

I'm talking about the analysis which just allows you to move your pieces around the board to look at different positions without any help from the computer, or any indication of whether its a good move or not. This function is literally one of the functions they give you during a daily game, so I am assuming daily games are played with this in mind?

However, if you are not using it, then let me know and I shall also not use it for our game :-)

I think as long as a person is using their own grey matter and having fun that’s all that really matters happy.png

Very true happy

Daily games are simply a different beast. As long as it is legal you can do and use anything. You cannot seek/use advice from another person. You can use a board/boards online and work through and record moves, as long as you are not using an engine! (including engine lines being displayed I would presume)

Edited to add - ~incouraged to explore moves ~~ normal game - one is also encouraged to explore moves. The difference is in a normal game one does it all mentally, and with less available time. Daily allows one to use the tools Real or online boards along with potentially enormous amount of time.

hi

LOSTATCHESS

so there are built in tools to cheat in the 24 hour games - i just started playing these 24 hour games to get hopefully better using my own noggin and now you tell me there are built cheats to move pieces and try out different scenarios using the one that makes your position in the game better?????? i am crushed -- say this can't be so someone -- if not--- my faith in chess.com has gone down hill --- after i calm down -------------------is there another long game that doesn't have this cheating feature so i can play it instead

You could just ask your opponent not to use it. I realise there is an element of trust here, but 95% of chess players would probably keep their word. I'm 90% certain of that, meaning you have an 85.5% chance of a game without analysis being used happy

Tools was used loosely on my part describing the use of a board to help play out moves and it is perfectly legal. It is not cheating because both players can do as they wish. Saying one player cheated by using a board and the other player didnt is akin to saying one player played a hour game using his clock time cheating because the other player played the game like he was playing bullet.

As long as you don't use computer's help during a game, it considered as cheating. Cheating=help from computers or other persons, that can give you significant advantage. This function=you analyse the position on your own, so it's not cheating

Please look at this link to learn what resources are allowed while playing Daily Games. Once you do, it is up to you to decide if you want to proceed with playing daily games on chess.com.

Daily games (Correspondence Chess) are definitely a different type of game compared to Bullet/Blitz/Rapid. You are encouraged to use the resources allowed to you to play the best possible moves. I posted a link on what is and isn't allowed. The biggest thing to avoid is using a computer while playing daily games.

The rules are clearly stated on this site. Don't handicap yourself by choosing to not use allowed resources.
