Weird analysis

I wasn't sure what forum to post this, but I'll try here.

I'm a beginner in chess, so I obviously understand that the analysis tool often sees more than me. But, I sometimes feel like the suggestions seems a bit weird. Am I missing something here? Under the suggested next moves after d4, why would black not just play 11...cxd4, or at least 12...bxc4.

What game was that from? (It's easier to understand a computer analysis if you can see it reproduced.)

So the engine does come up with d4 as the best move, when run at the default Game Review depth and when using the cloud analysis.

I think you misunderstood the OP's problem. He doesn't question that d4 is the best move, the question is "why". Also, apparently the explanations don't make any sense, which is just confusing.

One problem is that the "main line" the Game review tool gives after d4 is some Rb8 nonsense (which is just bizarre).

Another problem is the explanation. White is sacrificing the d-pawn with d4, and the Game review explanation is "This created a threat to win a pawn" which is even more bizarre.

Thank you all for the answers. I'm glad i'm not the only one that finds the suggested next moves weird. As "Magipi" said, It was the suggested main line that seemed weird, not necessarily the move d4.

I do also think I now understand why d4 is the best move instead of d3 which was my initial thought, but I would very much appreciate to be corrected if i'm wrong!

While d4 frees up QB, it also stops Qxe5 after Qc7 threatening Qxh2#, and allows for Bc4. After Bc4 black has no time to attack, since they must defend against Qxf7#. So after something like for example 11. d4, cxd4 12. Bc4, bxc4 13. O-O, White is again threatening mate with Qxf7#.

While it is possible to defend against an immediate mate, black is in big trouble and white will win back material to justify sacrificing the bishop
